Hey, there! It's me, SMI Owner + Principal Designer, Shelby! I am excited to update you on all things Hilltop Home!
Rough-in inspections have passed and we are now moving on to the fun part, the design execution! It is safe to say that we are looking forward to this stage because we have stared at studs for quite some time now. Let's start in the heart of the home! It was important to us that the kitchen be classic, functional, and affordable. To accentuate the affordable part - we decided to paint the existing cabinets. The fun part was that I got to make the existing cabinets work in a NEW configuration. The closed off, small kitchen will now be an open l-shape with a freestanding island!
I even got Cyrus, our Lead Contractor and Project manager (and my husband!), to restore the old pantry cabinets to fit into our current home. Talk about a win!
Painting the cabinets allowed for us to pick any color. Naturally, I went with my go-to Aesthetic White SW 7035. Aesthetic White might look like a simple off-white, but it's actually a beige paint color that leans slightly into gray. I can attest to it's beauty because my whole home (ceiling, walls, trim work) is covered in it.
We wanted to warm up the warm white cabinetry with a wood toned top! We will be purchasing a basic butcher block top and staining it in Minwax Color Dark Walnut.
It was important to us that the backsplash bring in character and also play into the warm and cool tones that are in the space. We decided on the MSI Lakeview Dove 5" x 5" Tile.
Lastly, we decided not to inlay the hardwood floors that are throughout the rest of the main level in the kitchen/dining spaces. It was a tough decision and we went back and forth many a times. In the end, this came down to savings on labor and product costs. We did get a nice, natural looking tile from Home Depot. It looks like a slate but is ceramic! Daltile Cascade Ridge 12 x 24 Tile.
